Yard work is lonely and not just because my wife has clearly established that she wants nothing to do with it and not just because my kids always seem to be occupied with something "urgent" when the mower comes out. To be honest, my kids are willing to help but I usually prefer to just do it myself. There is something about the quietness of those moments. Even with the roar of the mower or the buzz of the edger or weed eater I usually get lost in my own thoughts. Often I find my mind wandering to big plans for my yard or I slip into a dream world where my time and funds are unlimited and I get to spend my life investing in people or projects that make me want to jump up and down as I walk behind the mower in my front yard. It's from behind the mower God has given me dreams and aspirations for my personal life, for my family, my students, my church, and countless other areas. As I walked the all too familiar path this morning, I found myself dreaming yet again of what could be. I dreamed of what could happen, I dreamed of what could be initiated, I dreamed of what could be accomplished. The reality is that some of my grass cutting dreams will probably never come true. Some of my ideas, some of my thoughts, will forever remain just that, ideas and thoughts. But think about this for a minute: what if even one of them came true. What if some of the craziest hopes, aspirations and dreams you've ever had could actually come true. Here's the best part: they can. Why not? What's stopping you? I know, I know: money, time, energy, the will to actually do it, etc., etc. But don't forget we serve a God that has unlimited resources. We serve a God that desires for His children to dream big dreams. You know why I think we stop dreaming big dreams? Because we're scared. We're scared we're going to fail. We're scared we're going to put forth the effort and we're going to fall short. We're scared that we're not going to follow through on the next step. So it becomes easier for us to just stick with what's already in front of us. Our lives are fine just the way they are. Are families are fine as they stand. Our finances are just okay. Our relationships are sustainable. What if we allowed ourselves to dream big dreams? What if we allowed God to plant a big dream in our hearts? What if we put ourselves in the regular position of dreaming big dreams. Maybe for you it's not from behind the mower. Maybe for you it's at the gym? Maybe for you it's early in the morning, or late at night? Wherever or whenever it is, start dreaming big. |
